The Long Beach Race 2015

We love the Long Beach races in October so in 2015 we added Lena to the race roster.  She ran the Aquarium Kids Fun Run which is one mile long.  She wasn't super thrilled about running but ended up being very competitive as she tried to pass people along the way.  It made for a great strong finish.  She loved getting her medal and admission to the aquariums as well.  Dan and I ran the half marathon this year tag teaming as we pushed the double BOB stroller with the girls inside.  It took us around 3 hours to run the 13 miles but we made it and everyone did great!  It was funny to pull over and change a diaper at mile 5 but it was a very bonding experience.

Shack Humor...The Legacy Continues...

Lena, decided to put her stickers in a very ummmm interesting place.  I thought she did it unknowingly and later learned she did it absolutely on purpose. 

Lena has been picking up some jokes from Micky Mouse Clubhouse and randomly telling them to Dan and I lately.  Here are a few:

Q: What kind of witch lives at the beach?
A:  A sandwitch!

Q: Why don't bears wear socks?
A: Because they have "bear" feet!

I've known for awhile that my girls (both of them) have a pretty good sense of humor.  Dan and I laughed a good while recounting the many funny things our girls did and said today.  They are hilarious!

Kinley is more of the physical comedy type of gal.

Dedication

We dedicated both Lena and McKinley at our church (Calvary Chapel Chino Hills) today.  Grandma and Grandpa Orr were there as well as Uncle Ben, Aunt Lindsay, and the cousins.  Pastor Jack Hibbs held Lena and prayed over her while she tried to play fight with him. (yikes!)  McKinley didn't want anything to do with Pastor Jack so I held her and he laid a hand on my shoulder while he prayed.   Kinley kept prying his fingers off of my shoulders like she thought the pastor had no business touching her mom.  The congregation and Pastor Jack got quite a kick out of that.  It was such a quick moment but so special considering the circumstances in how Lena and McKinley came to be born into our family.

Memory Work

This summer Dan and I started working with Lena on memorizing scripture.  Her Sunday school class sends home an age appropriate verse to be memorized each week so I bought a neat looking chalkboard at World Market on clearance and put it up in our dining room.  Each morning during breakfast we practice our verses.  She drew a picture of God to go with our verse.

 They have also been learning "God's Not Dead" by The Newsboys in Sunday school.  I didn't know this until one day it came on the radio while we were driving around town and she began singing with it.

Daddy's Tables

My Dad is the hardest person to buy presents for.  So for his birthday this year I was super excited because I finally made time to finish a surprise project for him that I had intended to finish a decade ago!  When my Dad was in junior high welding class he made two little side tables.  They originally had cream colored vinyl with gold metallic flecks and black and white check mini tiles- the perfect little mid-century modern pieces that stayed in my Grandma and Grandpa's house until they passed away.  I inherited these tables and held on to them for years before I finally decided to redo them as a surprise gift for my Dad.  First we removed all the old rotten materials until just his welded frame was left.  I re-painted the metal in a rust proof hammered metallic finish.  Then Dan cut plywood to fit in the frames.  I painted the wood with a sealing weather proof primer paint.  Next I broke slate tiles and layer out a pattern on the wood boards and secured the patterns with mastic.  When it was dry I applied a nice neutral colored grout to the tile.  This is where I hit a big snag in my project that almost ruined the tables.  The grout wouldn't come off the tiles!  I urgently called my neighbor who is a professional tiler and he told me I had selected grout that had epoxy in it and once set it wouldn't come off.  He tried his best to get it off the slate but it had been too long.  I was bummed.

 Since it was night I decided to quit for the day and clean up.  My finger nails were covered in cement-like grout that wouldn't wash off.  Then I remembered my Jamberry lacquer remover and to my surprise it took the grout right off.  Later that night I was lying in bed and had an idea.  If the lacquer remover took the grout off my nails maybe it could take the grout off the slate!  The next morning I used one and half bottles of lacquer remover to clean up my grout job on the tables and they looked perfect! The last step in making the tables was sealing the grout and tile.  After that they were ready to put in my parents' yard for my Dad's birthday surprise.  It turned out great; a nostalgic set of patio pieces redone in natural and timeless finishes that matched my parents' house.
